Program Details

This online sport management degree program consists of a 45 semester hour major with the number of courses varying. A total of 128 semester hours are required to graduate.

Course Descriptions

PHED 413/513 SPORT FACILITY MANAGEMENT

This course discusses the fundamental aspects of event and facility management.  Human resource management, legal issues, finance, purchasing, and communication will be rudimentarily addressed.

SMGT 113 Introduction to Sport Management

Introduction to the discipline of sport management and its vast array of career opportunities (the sport industry represents the eleventh largest industry in the U.S.).

SMGT 223 Sport Management Practicum

An experientially-based learning opportunity integrating 200 hours of planned and supervised professional experiences with an appropriate curriculum.

SMGT 253 TOURNAMENT AND EVENT MANAGEMENT

An introduction into the planning processes necessary to stage a sporting event with emphases placed on creating and locating the event, welcoming spectators and participants, and developing pertinent timelines and operational objectives for the event.

SMGT 263 COMMUNICATION IN SPORT

Since a sport organization’s success is largely dependent on the degree to which in can effectively communicate with key constituents, this class addresses a variety of communication-related topics, including public relations, image, media relations, and community relations.

SMGT 323 Governance and Leadership in Sport

The concepts of management and leadership are introduced to the student. The students become familiar with governing authority, organizational structure, and are able to describe elements of leadership theory and practices. Students describe the various skills, roles, and functions of sport managers in various sport agencies.

SMGT 333 SOCIOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF SPORT

Social Theories and Sport, sports and children, deviance in sport, aggression in sport, discrimination in sport, sports and the media, sports and the economy, sports and religion, amateur sport and society, professional sport and society and sport and the future are discussed.

SMGT 373 SPORT MARKETING

This course focuses on the application of marketing principles in a sport-related setting.  Specifically, the course will address content areas such as corporate sponsorships, ticket sales, broadcast agreements, promotional events, and direct marketing in the sport entertainment, sport participation, and sport goods sectors of the industry.

SMGT 423/523 LEGAL ISSUES IN SPORT AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

This course introduces the concepts of tort law, constitutional law, and statutory law as they relate to the sport professions and emphasizes liability-related issues as they impact sport administrators, exercise professionals, and teachers/coaches of physical activity.

SMGT 433 SPORT PSYCHOLOGY

The student will develop a better understanding of the psychosocial aspects of sport participation by exploring various psychological and physiological factors that influence the athlete. Students taking this course for graduate credit must complete all graduate course requirements.

SMGT 453/553 VOLUNTEER MANAGEMENT

This course is intended to prepare students to assume roles as volunteer program leaders and managers, or to improve their skills in existing roles with volunteer organizations and agencies. The fundamental design of the course is based on learning through critical thought in and about leadership and management roles with volunteers.

SMGT 463/563 SPORT FINANCE

Introduces the sport management student to financial challenges, financial statements, financial planning, and related issues within sport organizations.

SMGT 483 SENIOR SEMINAR

This course, designed to serve as a capstone class for the Sport Management major, will strive to integrate all previous courses with the most current information to prepare students to enter the sport industry.  Emphasis will be placed upon trends and current readings in sport management.  Developing a management, professional, and personal, and personal philosophy of sport management will be covered.  Additionally, resumes, job searches, graduate school programs, and entry-level job requirements and expectations for future sport managers will be addressed.

SMGT 476 SPORT MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP

Students spend the equivalent of full-time employment in an appropriate agency for a total of no less than 400 hours.  Prerequisites: 90 hours of accumulated course credit, PHED 413/513, 2.5 overall GPA, and internship coordinator’s permission.

Credit hours: Six Hours

General Education Core Requirements

Students must earn a minimum of 37-38 semester hours in general education courses prior to graduation. Students must take one course from each of the following disciplines.
